I've been doing a bit more research on apps and QR barcodes. I'm not sure how familiar you are with them so I've written a short bit of information on both of them, I've also included links where possible to websites that'll explain a bit more.
QR Codes are the simplest of the two. Quick Response Codes are a means of linking a user to a web page, text or address and can be generated online quite simply by using websites like http://goqr.me/.
Most mobile phones now come with a QR scanner as part of the camera, with others you have to download a scanning app, of which there are many.
It's a great idea if you're doing something like a guided tour or even an audio guide, put a QR code next to a place of interest and members of the public can scan the code on their mobile phones and be directed to a web page that has more information on it.
Here is a site that'll explain an little more about it's capabilities. QR Codes

We've talked about the possibility of producing an app to go along with the exhibition, this is slightly more complicated and would require getting a developer on board, but as you and Hannah had discussed, this would be a great workshop for children to get involved with and it's something that they could really make their own. After looking at the top free apps of 2011 it was clear that social networking apps were on top. Maybe this is something to think about?
I've found a few companies in South Wales that will build the app you're after, kapowcreative are based in Cwmbran, Rant Media are based in Cardiff and Caboodle Media are from Llanelli. Just click the links to have a peek at their websites.
This app could be really fun and it would be great to draw on other peoples information and links with other groups.
